Sculpture
Although Telfair Museums' sculpture collection started out modestly (Mary Telfair's bequest in 1875 included several sculptures, such as marble statues and relief plaques), it quickly grew. The museum's first director, Carl Brandt, notably acquired the set of five sculptures that now stand in front of the Telfair Academy in 1883. Brandt also purchased plaster casts of famous antique Greek and Roman sculptures, which were installed in the Telfair Academy Sculpture Gallery in 1886. Since then, the collection has developed to include a broader breath of works–such as contemporary art and self-taught art–in a variety of mediums.
